How to Calculate Percentages Easily

Percentages appear everywhere: sale prices, restaurant tips, salary changes, statistics, taxes and financial comparisons. The basic idea is simple: a percentage describes a part out of 100.

Finding a percentage of a number

If you want to know 15% of 200, convert 15% into 0.15 and multiply it by 200.

15% of 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30

Calculating a discount

A 20% discount on an item priced at 80 means you save 16, so the final price is 64. The calculator above shows both the sale price and the amount saved.

Percentage increase and decrease

Percentage change compares the difference between an old and a new value with the original value. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase. Going from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease — the percentages are different because the starting values are different.

Reverse percentages

Sometimes you know the final number but need the original one. If an item costs 80 after a 20% discount, 80 represents 80% of the original price. Dividing 80 by 0.8 gives an original price of 100.

Why two discounts are not simply added

If an item priced at 100 is reduced by 20%, it becomes 80. A further 10% discount is then calculated from 80, reducing the price by another 8. The final price is 72 — an overall discount of 28%, not 30%.

Using the tip calculator

Enter the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people. The tool calculates the tip amount, total bill and equal share per person. It is useful when you want a quick result without doing several calculations separately.

Percentage Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate X percent of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply the result by the number. For example, 25% of 60 is 0.25 × 60 = 15.

How do I calculate percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide the difference by the old value, then multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

If the final price is known, divide it by the percentage of the original price that remains. After a 20% discount, 80% remains, so divide the final price by 0.8.

Can percentages be greater than 100%?

Yes. A value of 150% means one and a half times the reference value. Percentage increases can also exceed 100% when a value more than doubles.

Why can a 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease give a different result?

Because the second percentage is calculated from a different base. If 100 increases by 20% it becomes 120. Reducing 120 by 20% gives 96, not 100.
